I joined Toastmasters when Hilltop Toastmasters was being started in the spring of 2011. The meetings were going to be held on Tuesday nights and I didn’t have to work on Tuesday nights. It was perfect. I had heard of Toastmasters before then because my husband was already a member. I joined because it seemed like it would be a lot of fun and that it would be educational as well.
With a job in the customer service industry, I felt that it could help me relate better to my clients and co-workers. Since joining, I have achieved my ACG ALB. What I have really achieved though is much more. I have greater confidence in my ability to communicate with others. I use the leadership and evaluation skills that I have learned not only in Toastmasters but also at work. The skills are so transferable.
I plan to get my DTM, continue with the new Pathways and likely take on more leadership roles. In every meeting I attend, I learn something. I don’t see that changing. If in the process of learning I can help someone else to learn something then it is a win/win situation.
George is a registered professional engineer, graduated in mechanical engineering in England. He has worked on many engineering facets of the Canadian nuclear industry. George is bilingual and likes to play bridge as a form of relaxation. His two passions are Toastmasters and Rotary.
George has been a Toastmasters Member since February 2011. He was Area Director for Area 35, 2016-2017. George learned a lot from the many educational and leadership opportunities, that are available beyond the Clubs. As a very engaged Area Director, George contributed to making District 86 a Distinguished District, 2016-2017. George was instrumental in getting Mayor Rob Burton to proclaim March 2017, as Toastmasters Month in the Town of Oakville. George is also the proud founder of Oakville Toastmasters Club, chartered on April 11, 2017.
Mina Yoon (ACB/ALB) joined Confidently Speaking Toastmasters in November 2013 after seeing someone deliver a phenomenal speech. Mina was inspired to improve her own speaking skills but soon learned that there was much more that Toastmasters could offer. In addition to the educational track, Mina began taking on leadership roles at the club level, first as VP Membership (2014-2015) and then President (2015-2016). It was during her presidency role that Mina grew the most, learning about all the resources available to members from the Area, Division, District and World Headquarters.
Last year (2016-2017), Mina took on the role of Area 45 Director, motivated by a desire to go beyond the club and meet and work with other Toastmasters. As Area Director, Mina most enjoyed the club visits and contest season. Visiting each club more than the minimum requirement, Mina got to know many of the members by name. As part of the Division C team, Mina took part in organizing contests, training and volunteered with the Fall Conference, all of which allowed her to further grow as a leader and communicator. Seeing her Area complete the year strong as a President’s Distinguished Area, and achieving the Club Growth challenge of “Grow by One” was a sweet finish to an already wonderful year as Area Director. Mina’s next Toastmasters goals include continuing to work towards her DTM and also competing at an upcoming contest!
